Whether you’ve just moved into a property, have a growing family, or bought with the intent to renovate, home improvement and expansion is an enticing thought.

There’s a lot to think about all the way from bricks to décor, but here at ADT we’re experts in security. So, we’ve pulled together a list of great safety features to add to extensions, loft conversions and renovations so you can keep that extra home value protected.

Windows

Windows are one of the most likely ways burglars will access your property, especially by those not looking out onto a street or in a place with poor evening lighting. It’s important to choose windows with key locks so they can’t be easily forced open. We also recommend fitting extra bolts and locks to show potential burglars you mean business.

Doors

Second to windows, are doors. When you’re thinking about which doors to choose there are a few things to look out for to keep your family safe as houses. Firstly, look for doors classified as ‘British Standard (BS) Kitemark PAS 24-1’, this means the door is at least 44mm thick with a peep hole at eye level and metal plates around the lock. It’s also a good idea to choose a strong frame to go along with it.

Be sure to avoid glass panels so burglars can’t smash it to gain access to the lock on the inside. You can also attach deadbolts and chain locks to be extra safe.

CCTV

CCTV cameras are one of the best deterrents for an opportunistic thief. They show you’re serious about your security and could easily identify strangers on your property. Or, if you have a product like ADT Smart Home, that you’ll be notified as soon as they even approach the house.

If you’re adding an extension, make sure you think about the best position for your cameras, so you don’t leave blind spots and weak points. This should also be backed up with outdoor lighting to get a clear photo of any intruders.

Outdoor lighting

If you’re extending your property, it’s worth considering outdoor security lighting. Lights on a sensor are particularly effective not only to give you peace of mind – lighting up as soon as there’s someone on your property, but to stop burglars in their tracks knowing they’re bound to be caught out.

Alarm and Smoke detectors

Moving indoors, whether it’s an extension or a renovation you’re planning it’s likely you’ll have to relook at where your alarms, heat and smoke detectors live. You want to make sure if the worst were to happen your new rooms are within their radius.
