Get to know your neighbours

First thing’s first, get to know your neighbours. This could be as big as throwing a garden party, or as small as an introduction next time you see them leaving the house. That way if someone on your street were to get burgled, you have a support system literally on your doorstep.

Take note of people in your area

While you’re introducing yourself to households nearby, it’s good to take note of who people are around the neighbourhood. Are there elderly people who may need help, houses with teenage kids who could cause mischief, or students likely to attract burglars’ attention? You’ll get to know where you can help out, what to watch out for and also come to recognise anyone who isn’t a part of your community hanging around.

Set up a neighbourhood watch

If you have a strong enough group of neighbours interested in making their homes safer, why not set up a neighbourhood watch? From litter clean ups, to patrols, this organisation brings together communities with small tasks to create a safer UK. Take a look at their website for some inspiration.

Park on the drive

If you’re away on holiday, or even just for the evening, why not ask a neighbour to park on your drive. That way any opportunistic thieves will think you and your family are home and turn tail.

Sort the post

Even small signs of vacation can give burglars all the momentum they need to rob a property. Post on the doormat is a clear sign you’ve not been home in a while. Ask a neighbour to pop by and collect your letters at least every couple of days.

Turn on outdoor lighting

Having a well-lit street is key to put off potential intruders. Make a rota with neighbours to pop on their outdoor lights. That way you share the cost and keep the street lit up to minimise burglaries.
