If you’ve experienced – or are experiencing – a power cut, you might be left wondering what to do with your security system, and whether or not your home or business will remain secure while the power is down.

Does your security system still work during a power cut?

Most common alarm systems, including ADT models, feature built-in backup batteries, specifically to keep your security system up and running in the event of a power cut. You won’t have to do anything for your alarm to start using power from the backup battery, it will switch to batteries automatically when mains power is out. 

Why does my alarm sound during a power cut?

The most common reason alarms sound when power drops is due to a faulty or not-charged backup battery. This could result in the siren activating or sounding during a power failure. Depending on your alarm, you may be able to replace this yourself, or you may have to contact the manufacturer to do it for you and disarm the alert with a code – always consult the manufacturer’s manual first.

The alarm system will give an indication of a mains power failure by bleeping shortly after the mains outage occurs. You should be able to shut off the noise with a code or another instruction.

More advanced alarms are able to charge their own backup batteries through the mains power when restored. However, if issues persist, we’ll check for faults through our remote service, and will service your alarm system at a time that suits you. 

How do I reset my alarm after a power cut?

You shouldn’t need to reset your alarm after a power cut. After you’ve dismissed any alerts and ensured the backup battery is working correctly, your alarm should continue working as normal. 

If you have any other issues with your alarm, consult your manual or contact the manufacturer for further advice. With older alarms, you may simply be able to cut off mains power and remove the backup battery to shut the system down completely in the meantime.
